Court grants bail to Frenchman on medical groundsAugust 5th, 2008 - 11:15 pm ICT by IANS
New Delhi, Aug 5 (IANS) Citing medical grounds, the Delhi High Court Tuesday granted bail to a Frenchman who has been booked under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. Justice Anil Kumar granted bail to Jullien Kanoui after he moved an application stating that he was suffering from AIDS. Kanoui was asked to furnish one surety and one personal bond of Rs 100,000 each. He was also asked to deposit his passport with the court and told to seek its permission in case he wants to travel outside the capital.
The court also barred the French Embassy here from issuing any travel related documents to Kanoui.
Before passing its order, the court considered a report from the state-run Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital here, which stated Kanoui was suffering from AIDS and that the disease was in an advanced stage.
The Narcotics Control Bureau arrested Kanoui in Jan. 2007 after he was found to be carrying hashish. The bureau later raided a spot at Holambhikalan in Outer Delhi and recovered another 1,210 kg of hashish.
Kanoui is presently lodged in the Tihar Jail here.
