Court grants bail to former RAW official
July 24th, 2009 - 10:31 pm ICT by IANSNew Delhi, July 24 (IANS) A city court Friday granted bail to a former Research and Analysis Wing (RAW) officer accused of disclosing classified information through his book on the working of the external intelligence agency.
Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Kaveri Baweja allowed regular bail to Major General (retired) V.K. Singh, a former joint secretary in RAW, on personal and two surety bonds of Rs.100,000 each.
The court allowed the application for Singh’s regular bail on the grounds that he had never been arrested by Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) during investigation of the case.
Singh and Vivek Garg of Manas Publication were accused of revealing secret information through Singh’s book “India’s External Intelligence: Secrets of RAW” in violation of the Official Secrets Act.
Singh was required to seek regular bail in the matter as the court had already taken cognizance of the chargesheet filed against him Jan 31.
The CBI Sept 20, 2007 registered a case against Singh and Garg for allegedly violating Section 5 (wrongful communication of information) of the Act. It also charged Singh under sections 120-B (criminal conspiracy) and 409 (criminal breach of trust by a public servant) of the Indian Penal Code.
