Court extends remand of Sopore woman student
July 20th, 2011 - 12:14 am ICT by IANSSrinagar, July 19 (IANS) A local court Tuesday extended the remand of a woman student arrested on charges of working for separatist guerrillas in north Kashmir’s Sopore town.
“Sopore police arrested Qurat-ul-Ain of Jalalabad, Sopore, on the charges of providing safe house, logistic support and acting as a courier for foreign militants especially, Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) commander Abdullah Uni. Today, she was produced before the court,” a police spokesman said.
“The court…extended her police remand by seven days till July 26. Her role in the recent attack on the Sopore police station is also being investigated,” he added.
“Her activities were under constant surveillance, as she was initially working as an OGW (overground worker) for LeT militant Hamza, also known as Zubair. Hamza was killed in an encounter with police and security forces June 21 at Bagat Batpora in Sopore,” the spokesman said in a statement.
Hardline separatist leader Syed Ali Geelani has threatened to call for protests Friday if Qurat-ul-Ain was not released immediately.
