New Delhi, Dec 16 (IANS) Dismissing a petition seeking disqualification of Congress president Sonia Gandhi as a Member of Parliament (MP), the Delhi High Court Wednesday said there was no need for an inquiry into an award given to her by the Belgium government in 2006.
A division bench comprising of Chief Justice Ajit Prakash Shah and Justice S. Muralidhar dismissed the petition filed by Janata Party president Subramanian Swamy seeking direction to the Election Commission to hold an inquiry against Sonia Gandhi.
“There is an urgent need of conducting an proper inquiry into the case. It seems that the government is trying to hide something and a message must go to the public that no one is above the law,” Swamy argued before the bench.
The court, however, was not satisfied and said that Election Commission has analysed the case and there is no question of further inquiry.
“If you will start suspecting everyone then the courts won’t be able to help you out,” the bench said.
Gandhi was awarded the Order of Leopold, the second highest civilian award of Belgium, and an honorary doctorate degree during her visit to Belgium in November, 2006.
