Court asks Amar Singh to depose in cheating case
February 25th, 2009 - 10:19 pm ICT by IANSNew Delhi, Feb 25 (IANS) A city court here asked Samajwadi Party general secretary Amar Singh to personally appear in a cheating case he had filed two years ago. The court had earlier fined Singh for not appearing in the court.
Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Kaweri Baweja gave Singh a final opportunity to appear before the court Thursday to record his statement.
“Time and again, opportunity has been given to the complainant but he has failed to appear in the court. Today no application was filed, neither any reasonable ground has been mentioned,” the court said.
On Feb 20, the court had fined Singh Rs.5,000 for failing to appear in court.
Singh had registered a case against Barun Kumar Verma in June 4, 2007 alleging he tried to extort money from him in connection with a case in the Supreme Court relating to Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav.
Anoop Kumar Sharma, counsel for the accused, sought the court’s permission to close the case as Singh had failed to depose despite being given several opportunities.
According to the complaint lodged by Singh with Special Cell of the Delhi Police, the accused, who posed as a law officer, had tried to extort Rs.50 million from him saying that he could fix the judge, who will hear the case against Yadav in the disproportionate assets case.
