Ambala, April 29 (IANS) A dispute over property Friday claimed the life of a couple when their neighbour opened fire on them in this Haryana city, police said. The man has been arrested and two women were detained by the police.

Inderjeet Singh, 50, and his wife Neena Devi, 45, were fired at from close range by their neighbour, identified by the police as Ramesh Khurana, in their house on Jalhera road here.

The neighbour, who fired several rounds at them, fled the scene on his scooter but was arrested later, police said.

Davinder Yadav, assistant superintendent of police, said, “We have arrested Ramesh while his wife Veena and relative Bala have been detained. We are questioning them regarding this incident.”

“Relatives of the deceased couple ransacked the house and shop of Ramesh to vent their anger. We have deployed police in the area to prevent any further untoward incident,” he added.

The police said that while Inderjeet Singh died on the spot, his wife Neena was rushed to a hospital with serious injuries. She was later referred to the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) in Chandigarh, 45 km from here, but she died on way.

Police investigating officer Atma Ram told IANS, “The couple were fired upon by their neighbour Ramesh over a property dispute.”

“Ramesh runs a shop that is located near the couple’s house. There was an old dispute between them over ownership of some property and a case regarding it is pending in the court. Earlier, they had indulged in a brawl over the issue,” he added.

Police officials said that Neena, who worked as a nurse in a dispensary at Durana village here, had just returned home after dropping their child at school when the attack took place.

Ramesh fired at Neena outside their house and shot dead Inderjeet inside.
