Couple killed in roof collapse
July 11th, 2010 - 10:05 pm ICT by IANSChandigarh, July 11 (IANS) A couple who ignored warnings that their house was unsafe were killed in their sleep when its roof collapsed here early Sunday, police said.
Ramji Patel and his wife Lochan were pulled out dead from the debris by police and volunteers from the neighbourhood in Mani Majra suburb of Chandigarh.
Despite warnings, the duo chose to sleep in the room where the roof collapsed in the wee hours of Sunday, police said.
On Saturday, the victims sent their two children to a relative’s house after neighbours said their rented house was not safe.
Neighbours told police that the couple, who had returned from a holiday just a day back, had been living in the house for nearly five years.
Their landlord and neighbours had told them that the house structure was old and it could collapse anytime.
