Lucknow, Sep 16 (IANS) A couple arrested Sunday from Siddharthnagar district with fake currency notes nominally worth Rs.575,000 have admitted to circulating over 10 million fake notes in Uttar Pradesh in the past few months, officials said Tuesday. The amount circulated by Zaquir and Mamta Sahi, arrested from Bhalua village Sunday evening, was difficult to ascertain, though most notes were in the denomination of Rs.500 and Rs.1,000.

This is the second major fake currency haul after a racket surfaced in the State Bank of India branch in Domariyaganj, neighbouring Siddharthnagar town, with the arrest of its cashier Sudhakar Tripathi July 29.

“During interrogation, the duo revealed that they used to buy fake currency notes at half the value from a man in Bihar and later circulate them in Uttar Pradesh,” Siddharthnagar superintendent of police Anil Das told IANS.

The two are natives of Motihari district of Bihar and are also suspected to be working along with Tripathi and his partner, Abid Sheikh.

The police said vital clues about the supplier of the fake notes were gathered and a police team will soon leave for Bihar.

“Two of their associates, Surendra and Ramesh, managed to escape during the raid and we hope to arrest them soon,” Das added.
