Corrupt ex-ONGC official jailed for three years in 1987 case

Mumbai, Jan 24 (IANS) A special court here Tuesday convicted a former ONGC official to three years rigorous imprisonment in an almost two-and-a-half-decade-old corruption case.

“The anti-corruption branch of Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), Mumbai, had registered a case against I.P. Shankaran, the then superintending engineer (civil), ONGC for possession of assets of Rs.22.80 lakh disproportionate to his known sources of income,” an official said.

“After completion of detailed investigation, a chargesheet was filed against the accused in a special court on March 23, 1989,” he added. ONGC was then known as the Oil and Natural Gas Commission. It is now the Oil and Natural Gas Corporation.

Convicting and sentencing Shankaran, special judge V.V. Virkar also fined him Rs.1 lakh. The disproportionate assets of Rs.23 lakh have also been ordered to be confiscated.
