Chennai, Sep 8 (IANS) The contract workers at power company Neyveli Lignite Corp Ltd (NLC) have struck work from Monday morning, demanding Rs.1 million compensation for the family of an employee who died in a vehicle accident inside mine II Sep 4. The worker’s demand is more than double of what the management offered.

A company official preferring anonymity told IANS that apart from the huge financial compensation, the contract workers’ union also demanded immediate employment for a family member of the dead and the suspension of couple of officials.

“NLC offers employment to one family member of a deceased worker if the death occurs during the course of employment. But the process would take some time,” he said.

“The contract workers’ union has played the emotional card and prevented performance of final rites till this morning. The body was kept at a Pondicherry hospital where the worker was taken immediately after the accident,” the official added.

This morning the final rites were performed and NLC official hopes the heat would subside now.

He added that the company has formulated a scheme whereby the contractors, workers and NLC would contribute to a sum that would be used to deal with such situations in the future.

“Discussions will be held with the unions for activating the scheme,” he said.

This is the third time the contract worker go on strike this year. In March-April and later in June the union struck work, demanding they be absorbed and other perks at par with permanent workers.

The strike was called off as the management agreed most of the demands.
