Congress suspends 11 rebels in Bengal
April 13th, 2011 - 10:46 pm ICT by IANSKolkata, April 13 (IANS) The Congress Wednesday suspended 11 workers who are contesting as independents against the party’s official candidates in the upcoming assembly elections in West Bengal.
The 11 who have suspended are from those areas which go to the polls in the first and the second phase of elections April 18 and April 23 respectively.
“We have suspended 11 Congressmen who are contesting as independents against the Congress and Trinamool Congress alliance candidates….. there should be decorum and discipline in the party,” party general secretary Shakeel Ahmed told IANS.
“This is a warning to others who have fielded themselves as independents against the alliance candidates. If they abide by the rules of the party, its good otherwise we will be forced to expel them,” Ahmed told IANS.
The Trinamool is contesting 226 constituencies and Congress is fielding candidates in 65 for the 294-member assembly. The state will have six-phase elections ending May 10.
Few Congress rebels remained unmoved and vowed to fight as independents.
“I am fighting to save Congress in the state. I am a true Congressman. I will fight as an independent as leaders in this area want me to fight and win,” said Ram Pyare Ram, a former Congress legislator who is contesting as an independent candidate from Kolkata-Port.
