Guwahati, May 13 (IANS) The Congress party was Friday set for a third consecutive term in Assam with the opposition almost routed.
According to trends at 11 a.m., the Congress was leading in 72 of the 126 seats while the main opposition Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) was ahead in just seven seats, followed by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in six seats.
Surprisingly, the Asom United Democratic Front (AUDF) emerged as the second formidable opposition leading in 12 seats, while the Bodoland People’s Front (BPF), an ally of the Congress, is leading in 11 seats.
The remaining leads are shared among smaller parties and independents so far.
“The trends are on expected lines and as I said earlier, we are forming the next government comfortably. People of Assam voted us based on our performance in the past 10 years,” Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi told IANS.
The opposition AGP and the BJP have already accepted defeat. “We must respect the mandate of the people,” a senior AGP leader said.
