Congress MLAs disrupt Tripura assembly
March 9th, 2011 - 8:21 pm ICT by IANSAgartala, March 9 (IANS) The mysterious death of a young tribal woman in western Tripura led to an uproar in the Tripura assembly Wednesday as the opposition Congress members disrupted proceedings demanding the resignation of the chief minister.
The bedlam and disruption continued for over an hour forcing Speaker Ramendra Chandra Debnath to adjourn the house three times.
The body of Ranubala Debbarma (26) was found in the Dafadar Bari forest in west Tripura Tuesday. She had gone there Monday to collect firewood.
As soon as the house assembled Wednesday for the budget session, opposition Congress leader Ratan Lal Nath and other party MLAs raised the issue and demanded Chief Minister Manik Sarkar’s resignation owning moral responsibility over the crime.
Rejecting the speaker’s appeals to remain calm, the opposition legislators rushed to the podium shouting slogans.
“The Left Front government is trying to protect criminals,” they shouted before walking out of the house.
The chief minister, who also holds the home portfolio, later told the assembly that the woman’s death was being probed by an Indian Police Service officer.
The chief minister assured the house that the government will not allow the guilty to go unpunished.
