Bhubaneswar, March 7 (IANS) A special court in Orissa Monday ordered confiscation of the properties of a retired Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer in a 10-year-old graft case, an official said.

The special vigilance court in Bhubaneswar ordered confiscation of the properties of R.C. Behera on the basis of prima facie evidence that he accumulated assets of worth Rs.485,000, disproportionate to his known sources of income, officer on special duty of the state vigilance cell Devadutta Pattnaik told IANS.

The vigilance department raided Behera’s office and residence in 1990 when he was posted as director of municipal administration and additional secretary, housing and urban development department, he said.

A charge-sheet had been filed against him in the case in 1995. In a rare developement, the order for confiscation of properties came from a special court even though the case has been pending in a separate trial court, Pattnaik said.

Behera, a 1979 batch Orissa cadre officer, was posted by the state government as officer without duty in 2008. Although he sought voluntary retirement the same year, the state government denied him permission. Behera retired in 2010 after completion of his service.
