New Delhi, June 7 (IANS) A 24-year-old man, who reported the murder of his neighbour, was arrested along with his friend for robbing and then killing the victim, police said Tuesday.

“Sanjay and Virender, 46, were arrested from Rohtak (in Haryana) Monday for killing Sunil with an axe after robbing him,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police B.S. Jaiswal.

Police said that Sanjay called the Police Control Room May 25 to say that a foul smell was emanating from the room adjacent to where he was living as tenant at Kanjhawala area in west Delhi.

“We reached the spot and broke open the room. Ram Lakhan, who hails from Samastipur in Bihar, was found dead with several injury marks on the body,” said Jaiswal.

Police said that during investigation, the role of Sanjay was found to be suspicious as he went missing soon after the registration of the case.

“We traced him to Haryana and arrested him,” said Jaiswal.

During interrogation, Sanjay told police that he along with Virender killed Ram Lakhan with axe as they were in urgent need of money.

“After the murder, they took away Rs.40,000 and equally divided the money between them,” said Jaiswal, adding that the murder weapon had been recovered from them.
