Compensation paid to families of Metro accident victims
July 15th, 2009 - 9:40 pm ICT by IANSNew Delhi, July 15 (IANS) The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) Wednesday paid Rs.50,000 out of the Rs.500,000 it had announced as compensation for the families of each of those killed in the Metro accident.
“Out of Rs 500,000, Rs.50,000 has been paid as interim relief in cash to the next of kin of each of the six persons who died in the accident. The rest, Rs 450,000, will be converted into fixed deposit for three years,” a DMRC statement said.
Seven workers who suffered major injuries have been given the full compensation of Rs.50,000 each while eight people with minor injuries were given Rs.10,000 each.
The All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) said four workers were still in hospital.
At least 15 people were injured Sunday when a concrete viaduct on which the rails will be laid collapsed, raining down pieces of tonnes of steel and concrete on scores of unsuspecting workers.
A day later, second accident occurred during the clearing operations Monday, when three cranes toppled over, injuring six more workers.
The DMRC has appointed a private audit firm - Shirish Patel and Associates - to undertake technical audit of critical structures. The firm “has also started its work,” the DMRC said.
“An expert on erection of heavy structures has also started his inquiry into Monday’s mishap involving cranes,” the statement added.
