Compensate rape victim, Bihar told
January 31st, 2012 - 8:23 pm ICT by IANSNew Delhi, Jan 31 (IANS) The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) Tuesday asked the Bihar government to pay Rs.5 lakh as interim relief to a woman raped by a home guard at a police outpost in West Champaran district last year.
The chief secretary of the state has also been directed to send within four weeks the proof of payment made to the victim, who was raped in Bagah area March 4, 2011, an NHRC statement said.
District authorities have been asked to inform the commission whether the victim belonged to the Scheduled Castes or Scheduled Tribes category.
The Bihar government had informed the panel that the home guard was arrested and legal proceedings initiated against him.
The assistant sub-inspector incharge of the police outpost was also suspended and is facing departmental action.
