Commercial vehicles causing jams, not our fault: Delhi Police

New Delhi, Feb 2 (IANS) Blaming the city’s transport department for allowing overloaded commercial vehicles to enter the city, which eventually caused jams, Delhi Police Thursday said it was facing flak for no fault of theirs.
According to a message posted by Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Satyendra Garg on traffic police’s Facebook page, which has more than 95,000 followers, police say that those who were responsible for the situation don’t even care.
“Most of the commercial vehicles which are allowed entry in the city at night are overloaded much beyond limits. Transport department has not delegated prosecution for overloading to police and has kept it with itself,” said Garg.
“While many agencies which cause the problems are not on Facebook and do not even care to get feedback, agencies which are trying to improve get critical comments from ill-informed people,” Garg said.
The cop was reacting to a post on Facebook where the police was criticized for not taking action against overloaded commercial vehicles, and disappearing from the roads at night, while remaining vigilant only during VIP movements.
“Fitness checking and certification is with transport department. Naturally breakdowns result in massive congestion and when these things happen other government agencies are nowhere on the scene,” said Garg.
“Traffic police has to arrange removal of breakdowns which takes time. Yes, we do not have sufficient resources to remove breakdowns at a fast speed,” added Garg.
