Come-and-Play scheme has 10,000 on its rolls
September 6th, 2011 - 7:46 pm ICT by IANSNew Delhi, Sep 6 (IANS) More than 10,000 trainees have been enrolled in the Come-and-Play Scheme to utilise the infrastructure created for the 2010 Commonwealth Games (CWG), parliament was informed Tuesday.
The scheme, launched by sports ministry in May 2011, was introduced in five CWG venues — Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Swimming Pool Complex, Jawahar Lal Nehru Stadium, Karni Singh Shooting Range, Indira Gandhi Stadium Complex and Major Dhyan Chand Hockey Stadium, Sports minister Ajay Maken informed the Lok Sabha.
Replying to a question by Radhey Mohan Singh and Dhruv Narayana on the utilisation of the venues built for the CWG and the efficient use of funds generated out of them, Maken said a committee, headed by the director general of the Sports Authority of India (SAI), with eminent sportspersons and a senior sports journalists as its members, suggested various measures to use the stadia for sports purposes.
“The committee had given certain suggestions for proper utilisation of the five stadia - Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Swimming Pool Complex, Jawahar Lal Nehru Stadium, Karni Singh Shooting Range, Indira Gandhi Stadium Complex and Major Dhyan Chand Hockey Stadium,” Maken said.
“The scheme of Come-and-Play is one such recommendation of the said committee and more than 10,000 trainees have been registered for training under this scheme. In addition to this, the stadia are also being utilised for holding national camps and various kinds of competitions,” he added.
