Bogota, April 19 (IANS) Colombian oil production reached 562,000 barrels per day in February 2008, an 8.9 percent increase over the same month last year, Spain’s EFE news agency reported. The increase in production was due to the intense exploration activity over the last few months and the start of new small and medium-sized oil wells, the National Hydrocarbons Agency announced Friday.

Oil production in February 2008 was the highest in that month for the past six years.

“Through investments made in old oil fields and with small discoveries, we have managed to increase the volume,” the president of the Colombian Oil Association, Alejandro Martinez, told reporters.

Natural gas production also showed an increase, from 789 million cubic feet a day in February 2007 to 862 million in February 2008, an increase of 9.25 percent, mainly due to the development of the La Creciente field in the northern province of Sucre.
