New Delhi, March 16 (IANS) A 31-year-old Colombian man has been arrested here for running an international gang that committed two robberies within five days of its arrival in the capital, police said Wednesday.

After his arrest Tuesday evening, gang leader Edier Jaidiber of Bogota told police that he had studied the Indian Penal Code and believed that he won’t be put in jail for too long even if he was arrested.

Jaidiber was caught after police laid a trap on the basis of information that people with Mongolian features had been spotted in Saket area.

According to police, Jaidiber came to India March 10 on a three-month tourist visa with three associates — Edisson Maurieio, Carlos Alfanso and Monica Yulietch.

They initially stayed in two hotels in Karol Bagh.

The gang broke into the house of a senior citizen, Heena Dass, in Saket March 13. They robbed another house two days later in Saket, police said.

“It is for the first time Delhi Police have come to know about foreign criminals coming to India on tourist visa with the intention of committing crime,” Deputy Commissioner of Police H.G.S. Dhaliwal told reporters.

Jewellery worth Rs.15 lakh and Rs.1.65 lakh in cash were seized from him.
