Coach attendant found dead in express train
January 14th, 2012 - 11:32 pm ICT by IANSKolkata, Jan 14 (IANS) A coach attendant was found dead and another injured inside an air conditioned two-tier coach of the Jammu Tawi-bound Himgiri Express near West Bengal’s Asansol railway station Saturday, police said, amid allegations that they were shot by two drunk, ticketless passengers.
Sagar Thakur, shot on his chest, was declared dead at the Asansol sub-divisional hospital. Ganesh Shaw is hospitalised in a serious condition, said Director General of Police (Railways) Dilip Mitra.
An Eastern Railway statement said both victims were contract labourers engaged in supplying bed-rolls to the passengers in the train.
The statement called the deaths “mysterious” and claimed passengers had not heard any sound of fire and no mark of blood could be found on the floor of the coach.
However, some passengers complained that the victims had an argument with two ticketless passengers who had boarded the train from Howrah and started drinking.
A senior official of Asansol station said the injured had complained that they were shot at by the two passengers.
“We found the dead man under berth number 43-44 in the coach. The injured person was under another berth. He was saying: ‘Some people fired and left’.”
The Government Railway Police has started a probe.
