Kolkata, Jan 31 (IANS) Sporting Clube de Goa remained atop the standings with a 1-0 win over city club Mohammedan Sporting in the I-League here Saturday.Joseph Pereira netted the winner in the 16th minute of the opening session at the sparsely attended Salt Lake stadium to boost his side’s points kitty to 28 from 13 outings.
Having gone down to another Goa side Vasco in their previous game, Clube de Goa began cautiously, and seized control with Mohammedan Sporting looking listless.
The visitors got a chance in the 14th minute, but Rakshak Naik and Pereira failed to finish off from a goalmouth melee.
Pereira, however, made amends soon cashing in on a faux pas by Mohammedan Sporting custodian Naseem Akhtar, who made heavy weather of an easy ball, which slipped out of his hands and Pereira made no mistake in slotting home.
Akhtar was circumspect again in the opening minute of the second half, but Clube de Goa’s Obagbemiro Junior managed only a feeble shot that failed to deliver.
Mohammedan Sporting put up a better display after the breather, as substitute Suraj Mandal headed goalward a Satyajit Bose cross but Sporting Clube goalkeeper Felix D’Souza, later declared man-of-the-match, brought off a fine save.
Five minutes before the final whistle, Sporting came close to scoring, but Eugene Grey faltered in putting home a Mike Okoro centre.
