Cleaners to report drug abuse in London Olympic Village

London, Oct 4 (IANS) Domestic cleaners in the 2012 Olympic village in London will be told to report about drug abuse by the athletes.

The move is part of ‘intelligence-based’ strategy to unmask dope offenders. Jonathan Harris, the Games’ anti-doping medical services manager, says they have come up with a series of measures to arrest drug use.

“There will be intelligence sources from everything from security and cleaning staff to personnel working in functional areas,” Harris was quoted as saying in the Daily Mail.

“If they should come across behaviour that is untoward, they should share the information.”

A phone hotline will also be set up for athletes, coaches or anyone associated with the Olympics to voice suspicions.

So far, a seven-strong Intelligence Unit has been established and nearly 1,000 ‘chaperones’ for drug testing have been trained.

A record number of tests will also take place at venues where participants will be billeted. In total there will be 5,000 tests at the main Olympics and 1,250 at the Paralympics.

“Some could be tested more than once if we have intelligence,” said UK anti-doping chief executive Andy Parkinson.
