Pathankot (Punjab), May 14 (IANS) Angry relatives of a young woman stabbed to death in her classroom here by her stalker ransacked the college and blocked the national highway to Jammu Wednesday for over two hours. The family of the deceased, Monika, demanded strict action against accused Jasbir Singh, who was sent to jail by a court.

Spurned in love, Jasbir Singh Tuesday killed his former girl friend by stabbing her in full view of a shocked classroom at the S.D. College here, 250 km from Chandigarh. But no one came to her rescue.

Both were students of the Bachelor of Education (B.Ed) course. The stabbing took place when the students had gathered to submit their project reports to their teachers.

The college premises was ransacked by the girl’s family after none of the college authorities and students turned up at her cremation. A college employee received minor injuries.

Pathankot Superintendent of Police Harpreet Singh confirmed the incident. He said that police reinforcements were rushed to the college before more damage could be done.

“We want strict action against the accused. We have lost our sister for no fault of hers,” Monika’s brother Sulakhan Singh said.

Jasbir Singh, of Chejali village near here, stabbed Monika several times in front of other classmates and teachers Tuesday, the police said. Monika died on way to the hospital.

After the incident, Jasbir Singh locked himself on the roof of one of the buildings in the college and threatened to jump from there.

The police surrounded the building and were able to persuade him to come down only after soldiers from an army unit stationed nearby came to help. He was taken into custody.

Other students said that Jasbir Singh was upset with Monika in recent weeks after she spurned his marriage proposal.

They said the two had had an affair earlier, but Monika started avoiding him after she learnt that he belonged to a lower caste.

This angered Jasbir Singh and he purchased a knife. When the students gathered Tuesday to submit their project reports to teachers, he picked up an argument with Monika.

He then pulled out the knife and stabbed her several times on the chest and abdomen.
