Classical dancers showcase best of ‘guru-shishya’ tradition
October 3rd, 2010 - 11:35 pm ICT by IANSNew Delhi, Oct 3 (IANS) Classical dancers in traditional finery moved in perfect harmony, showcasing India’s ancient guru-shishya parampara at the Commonwealth Games opening ceremony Sunday.
Musicians playing sitars, which were lit up in white light and tablas in blue, set the rhythm for hundreds of dancers performing classical dance forms.
Matching step to step, a group of artists dressed in pink costumes gave a bharatanatyam recital, another group dressed in blue danced kathak, and yet another performed odissi.
Manipuri, mohiniattam and kuchipudi dances were also on display.
There was a riot of colour on stage and elsewhere too as parts of the stadia were lit up in different hues. As the crowd gaped, the dancers, dressed in all their colourful costumes, moved around the stadium.
The Bodhi tree of knowledge lit up as images of Gautam Buddha were shown on the aerostat.
It was the finest of Indian classical dance on display.
