Class 10 student commits ’suicide’ in Himachal schoolJune 23rd, 2009 - 1:15 am ICT by IANS
Shimla, June 22 (IANS) A Class 10 student of a prestigious school in Himachal Pradesh allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself in the school toilet, police said Monday.
“A student of Class 10 of Akal Academy at Baru Sahib allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself in the school toilet Sunday,” Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) B.K. Dhiman told IANS on phone.
He said the victim, Karan Singh, belonged to Kharar town in Punjab.
Baru Sahib is in Sirmaur district, some 120 km from here.
According to Kaka Bir Singh, a trustee of the academy, the student had committed suicide in the school hostel.
“The school staff noticed the body of Karan Singh hanging in the school hostel toilet at around 2 p.m. Sunday. They took the boy to a nearby hospital, from where he was referred to the Chandigarh’s PGI hospital. The boy died on the way to hospital,” he said.
The boy had joined the school in Class 2.
He ruled out the possibility of any foul play in the death of the student.
“The victim’s parents have been informed about the incident.”
“We are awaiting the report of the postmortem. I can’t comment before the report (postmortem),” DSP Dhiman said.
The Akal Academy is run by the Kalgidhar Society. The academy is affiliated to the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE).
More than 1,000 students, mostly Sikhs settled in foreign countries, are studying in the school, which is upto Class 12. It was established in 1987.
