October 29th, 2011 - 10:34 pm ICT by IANSKanpur, Oct 29 (IANS) The murder of a businessman sparked violent protests by people in this Uttar Pradesh city Saturday as they fought pitched battles with the police, damaged private vehicles and organised several road blockades, an official said.

Accusing police of not making serious efforts to nab those involved, hundreds of locals indulged in heavy brick-batting, targeting public property and private vehicles.
Police baton charged the protesters when they tried to torch some private buses and other vehicles.
“Security has been strengthened. The situation is still tense but it is under control,” police spokesperson Sanjay Singh told reporters here, some 80 km from state capital Lucknow.
“An inquiry is underway to ascertain the reason behind the murder of the businessman and arrest those involved in the crime,” he added.
