Citibank scam: Puri’s father sent to police custody
April 5th, 2011 - 8:02 pm ICT by IANSGurgaon, April 5 (IANS) Raghuraj Puri, the father of Shivraj Puri who is the prime accused in the Rs.400-crore Citibank scam, was Tuesday sent to two days’ police custody by a local court, police said. He was arrested a day earlier.
“He was absconding since the scam came to light. About a month back when his anticipatory bail got rejected, we traced him and kept calling him for questioning. Finally, he was arrested on Monday night,” said a senior police officer.
“We produced him in the court today (Tuesday) seeking his custody and he has been sent to two days’ police remand,” said Vikash Arora, Gurgaon deputy commissioner of police (east).
Police have also arrest another accused, Rajender, who worked with Raghuraj Puri’s brokerage firm.
Raghuraj Puri was running a brokerage firm named Norman Martin, in which transactions of more than Rs.10 crore took place from Shivraj Puri’s account.
Shivraj Puri, while working for Citibank, allegedly managed to con companies and high net worth individuals after forging a Securities and Exchange Board of India document that purportedly backed his claims about schemes offering high returns. The fraud came to light last year.
