Beijing, Jan 26 (IANS) Three people in Shanghai who repackaged and sold expired medicines worth over 186,000 yuan ($29,000) have been sentenced to jail.

The three pleaded guilty Wednesday in the Hongkou district people’s court, the Shanghai Daily reported Thursday.

The court sentenced brothers Sun Gang and Sun Xiaoping to one year and 15 months respectively, and the third convict, Li Jianfang, to six months in jail.

Prosecutors said the brothers bought expired medicines from Shanghai residents at low prices and packed them using new labels they collected from hospitals.

They used a printer to change the production date, batch number and expiration date on the packages. The expired medicines were then sold to street drug dealers at higher prices, the court heard.

The three were arrested in August last year. Police seized 86 kinds of medicines and over 4,000 drug packages from their home.
