Chinese policeman jailed for life over bribe
June 15th, 2012 - 4:47 pm ICT by IANSBeijing, June 15 (IANS) A former police officer in China’s Guangdong province who took bribes from mafia-style gangs and served as an umbrella for their illegal activities has been sentenced to life imprisonment, a media report said.
Feng Shiru, former deputy director of Yangjiang City Public Security Bureau, was charged with taking 7 million yuan ($1 million) in bribes and 4.5 million yuan in assets after being promoted to the post in 1995, Shanghai Daily reported.
While confiscating Feng’s illegal income, the Yangjiang Intermediate People’s Court deprived him of his political rights for life.
Feng received bribes from two ringleaders running underground casinos. He would tip them off ahead of a police operation. Both ringleaders have been sentenced to death, one with a reprieve.
The police officer also invested about $320,000 in a casino run by the gangs in Macao in 2004 and took advantage of his position to let convicted gang members to serve their sentences outside the prison, a media report said.
