Beijing, June 19 (IANS) Participants of an international animal welfare conference have urged China to urgently introduce an animal welfare law in the country.

China shelved its first draft animal welfare law in 2009 and since then no progress has been made, the Asia for Animals Conference, which recently held its meeting in southwestern Chengdu city, said.

It pointed out that about 100 countries have enacted laws to protect animal welfare, China Daily reported Sunday.

Mang Ping, of Beijing’s Central Institute of Socialist Studies, said abuses on animals commonly exist in industrial breeding, transport and slaughter of animals for food.

He said animal rights advocates should promote the idea of animal welfare as it will take time for the vegetarian concept to take roots among consumers.

China’s animal activism has been on the rise recently. Pictures and video clips posted on the internet showing cruel treatment of animals, including bile extraction from black bears, sparked strong criticism.

In April, about 200 people blocked a truck carrying hundreds of dogs for slaughter on a Beijing highway after a post on a micro-blogging site called for help.
