Beijing, Jan 8 (IANS) China cut over one-third of government expenses on official events last year, saving 1.22 billion yuan (about $193 million), Xinhua reported Sunday. The aim was to eliminate administrative irregularities and abuse of power in government agencies, public institutions and service sectors, the government said in a statement.

Some 2,549 activities deemed “unnecessary” were cut, it said. The government noted that soaring number of official events cost the exchequer dearly and exacerbated corrupt behaviours.

The Cabinet had ordered 98 ministries and government agencies to make public their budgets and expenditures on official overseas visits, public vehicles and receptions.

Prime Minister Wen Jiabao has urged the government agencies to reduce expenses, including cutting number of meetings.
