China axes TV entertainment shows
January 4th, 2012 - 4:37 pm ICT by IANSBeijing, Jan 4 (IANS) Entertainment programmes on China’s 34 satellite channels have been cut.
This follows a recently implemented rule that effectively curbed the “excessive entertainment” trend on the channels, according to China’s top broadcasting watchdog.
The total number of entertainment shows airing during prime time every week has been cut to 38 from 126 at the end of 2011, marking a 69 percent plunge. The new rule came into effect on Jan 1, China Daily reported.
The directive requires channels to broadcast at least two hours of news programmes between 6 a.m. and midnight.
It said the satellite channels have started to broadcast programmes that promote traditional virtues and socialist core values.
