September 16th, 2011 - 8:10 pm ICT by IANSBeijing, Sep 16 (IANS) Police in China have arrested about 2,200 suspected gangsters and destroyed 18 gangs during a nationwide crackdown, said the ministry of public security in a statement.
The anti-gangsters crackdown was launched Sep 1, Xinhua reported.
A total of 270 triad gangs have been broken up since police from 11 provinces, including Hebei, Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Fujian, Hunan and Guangdong, jointly launched the crackdown, the ministry added.
Triad are most well-known organised crime groups in China.
The ministry has ordered police to resolutely remove gangs’ “protective umbrellas,” root out their financial resources, and encourage the public to offer clues to help combat organised crime.
China began to focus on fighting organised crime in 2006. Since then, police have disrupted more than 2,100 triad gangs and imprisoned nearly 520 ring leaders or key members, the People’s Daily reported Friday.
