New Delhi, Dec 23 (IANS) With chilly winds gusting through the day and temperatures dipping below average, it was a cold Friday in Delhi as dense fog continued to hit rail traffic.

As many as 48 trains were running an hour late and 14 services were rescheduled in the capital where dense fog reduced visibility to 300 metres in the morning, according to the Northern Railways website at 6.40 p.m. Flights, however, remained unaffected.

?The maximum and minimum temperatures settled two notches below average at 19.9 and 6 degrees Celsius, respectively,? said an official of the India Meteorological department (IMD).

The humidity levels wavered between a high of 97 and a low of 35 percent.

The bone-chilling cold deterred Delhiites from venturing out of their homes while those who did wrapped themselves in layers of woollens.

Bonfires came to the rescue of the homeless and the poor as they fought the biting chill.

?The cold is just unbearable in the evenings. We cover ourselves in woollens from head to toe but it fails to stop our teeth from chattering,? said Vijay Kumar, a watchman in south Delhi’s Green Park area.

However, there seems to be no respite in store for the city’s residents with the IMD forecasting dense fog Saturday accompanied by icy winds blowing through the day.

?The maximum and minimum temperatures are expected to hover around 20 and 4 degrees Celsius, respectively,? said the IMD official.

On Thursday, the maximum temperature was recorded at 21.7 degrees.
