Children’s ‘parliament’ to discuss education, child labour
July 25th, 2009 - 3:17 pm ICT by IANS ( Leave a comment )New Delhi, July 25 (IANS) These may not be the usual child centric issues that one gets to hear about, but at the fifth ‘children’s parliament’, kids from across the country will come together to discuss their everyday battle against child labour, child marriage, exploitation and terrorism.
To be organised July 28-30, the ‘parliament’ will see more than 120 children from 65 villages.
Rakesh Senger of the Bachpan Bachao Andolan, a child rights group which is organising the meet, said: “The parliament will see elected child representatives from flood affected areas of Bihar, mica mines and Naxal (Maoist) hit areas of Jharkhand, places in Rajasthan where child marriages and gender discrimination is common and from the football industries of Uttar Pradesh come together.
“These children will relate their experiences while facing these challenges and discuss the means to address them.”
The children, who are part of the Bal Mitra Gram programme in their villages, will also talk about their right to education and chalk out demands to ensure they get this right.
“These children will not only represent 35 million primary school age Indian children, but also the 104 million out of school children who are in danger of being trafficked and exploited as forced labour,” Senger said.
Priya Dutt, member of parliament, Harish Rawat, minister of state for labour and Chief Justice of Delhi High Court A.P. Shah are expected to participate in the meet.
