Chidambaram should quit over terror list errors: BJP (Second Lead)

New Delhi/Lucknow, May 20 (IANS) The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Friday demanded union Home Minister P. Chidambaram’s resignation for putting out an erroneous terror list of India’s 50 Most Wanted men hiding in Pakistan that “weakened the country’s strong case against terrorism before the world”.
“These are not small mistakes. These goof-ups have resulted in loss of face for India in international forums. It is also worst kind of embarrassment for India vis-à-vis Pakistan. So his (Chidambaram) accepting responsibility is not sufficient. He has to go,” said BJP spokesperson Prakash Javadekar in New Delhi.
He said Chidambaram took over as home minister after 26/11 Mumbai attack with the promise and hope of bringing professionalism in the security affairs.
“But even while sending the DNA reports of the 26/11 attackers, it was revealed later that two DNA reports were of the same terrorist. Pakistan took full advantage of that goof-up and put our dossiers into the dustbin,” he said.
Javadekar said: “Suspending an inspector and transferring two other officers is not sufficient action. The buck stops at the door of the home minister. His earlier defence is that he had not prepared the list is the case of total abdication of his responsibility as the home minister.”
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) Friday suspended one inspector and shunted out a superintendent and deputy superintendent of police-rank officer after it was revealed that another person, whose name figured in the list of Most Wanted men hiding in Pakistan, was actually in a Mumbai jail.
Earlier this week, one person on the list was found living in Thane near Mumbai.
Speaking in Lucknow, BJP national vice president Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi said: “The manner in which India’s case against terrorism has been weakened, the home minister should not be allowed to continue with the post. If the prime minister has any concern over India’s security, he should immediately intervene into the matter and dismiss the home minister.”
