Chhattisgarh registers more than half of domestic violence cases

New Delhi, Oct 24 (IANS) A total of 2,921 cases of domestic violence against women were registered in the country in 2007, of which more than half were from Chhattisgarh alone, the Lok Sabha was informed Friday.Women and Child Development Minister Renuka Chowdhury said statistics available with the National Crime Records Bureau indicate that the number of cases being registered under the Protection of Women Against Domestic Violence Act, 2005, shows an increasing trend.

She said it is possible that after enactment of the act more cases are being registered, which were unreported earlier.

In Chhattisgarh, 1,651 cases were registered, in which 2,066 people were charged. But only in 101 cases were there convictions.

About 2,206 people were arrested in the state this year.

In 2005, a total of 1,497 cases were registered, while in 2006, there were 1,736 cases reported, the minister informed the house.

Chowdhury said that in order to enforce the act affectively, protection officers have been appointed in all states except Orissa, Punjab, Rajasthan, Jharkhand, Karnataka and Chandigarh.
