Chhattisgarh Congress seeks Lok Sabha ticket for four women (Lead)February 23rd, 2009 - 5:47 pm ICT by IANS
Raipur, Feb 23 (IANS) The women’s cell of the Congress party in Chhattisgarh Monday sought nomination for women in four of the state’s 11 Lok Sabha seats.
Vani Rao, who heads the cell, said she had made the request to party president Sonia Gandhi and state in-charge V. Narayanasamy.
Five of the 10 women fielded in the assembly election in November won.
“A 50 percent success rate is quite good and the party leadership must not overlook my demand of four women candidates,” Rao added.
She said the party’s women leaders wield a good following in Bilaspur, Janjgir, Raigarh and Durg.
In the 2004 Lok Sabha polls, the Congress won just one seat in the state - former chief minister Ajit Jogi’s Mahasamund constituency.
