Raipur, June 17 (IANS) Chhattisgarh Friday announced a two-month ban on fishing to protect fish during their breeding period in monsoon.

Violators would be booked under a law that provides for one-year imprisonment or a penalty up to Rs.5,000 or both, an official statement Friday said.

“A two-month ban on fishing in rivers, reservoirs, water ponds and all water sources in the state has been imposed as a ‘closed season’ for fishing. The ban period has begun from June 16 and will end August 15 and the decision is entirely aimed to protect fish during their breeding period,” the statement said.

A ban on fishing has been imposed just a day after monsoon hit the state. Most parts of the state have been receiving normal to heavy rainfall since early Thursday.

The state government has set up a flood control room at state secretariat that will collect complaints on telephones round-the-clock and rush rescue and relief teams on urgent basis.
