Cheruiyot and Dire Tune win Boston Marathon

CheruiyotRobert Cheruiyot and Dire Tune won the 112th Boston Marathon on Monday. While Robert won it for the fourth time, Dire Tune created a record by overpowering Alevtina Biktimirova by 2 seconds - the closest finish in the history of the women’s race.

While Robert took 2Hrs and 7 minutes 46 seconds, Dire took 2 Hrs 25 minutes 25 seconds to complete the marathon. Both the winners get $150,000 - the highest prize for any marathon in the world.

However, Robert could not break his record of 2 Hrs 8 minutes 16 seconds set two years back. While Dire went down to the wire to defeat Alevtina by 2 seconds, Robert had a comfortable 1minute 18 seconds lead over the runner up Abderrahine Bouramdane. With his third straight victory, Cheuiyot gave Kenya its 15th victory in 17 years, while Tune became the first Ethiopian woman to having won since Fatuma Roba winning the three straight women’s marathons in 1997, 1009 and 1999.
