Chennai savours India’s win
April 3rd, 2011 - 3:31 pm ICT by IANSChennai, April 3 (IANS) Smiling faces on the streets, animated discussions about the match, thumps up signs flashed to random strangers — the happiness and excitement of winning the World Cup was far from over for the people in this southern metropolis.
Early morning walkers on the Marina beach were gleaming with never-before energy.
“Yes, I slept late yesterday (Saturday) as it took time for the excitement to sink in. However, I can’t miss my morning walk,” R. Raghavan, a banker, told IANS.
Similar was the scene at the Nageswara Park here where middle-aged men were seen discussing the victory.
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi Sunday said in a letter: “My heart overflows with joy on the news that India has taken the World Cup, exhibiting to the cricket world once again that India is undoubtedly a major force in the global game.”
He said Indian team captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni richly deserves full praise and appreciation of the entire nation.
On Saturday night, just as Dhoni despatched the ball over the boundary line, it was like a Diwali here with the night sky lit with fireworks.
Residents of beach-facing Besant Nagar and Triplicane gathered on the beach and distributed sweets.
