Chennai, Feb 22 (IANS) After an urgent general body meeting, Madras High Court Advocates’ Association president R.C. Paul Kanagaraj announced the association would initiate contempt of court proceedings against police personnel for assaulting lawyers inside the court premises Sunday.
“We intend to move contempt proceedings against policemen who assaulted defenceless lawyers after courts start functioning Wednesday and pray for replacing local police with Central Industrial Security Force to protect the high court premises,” Kanagaraj told reporters.

According to Kanagaraj, the entry of policemen inside the court compound without the written permission of the registrar was prohibited.

The association’s extraordinary general body meeting decided on these and 16 more demands, and a day-long hunger strike Monday to express protest against police high-handedness, Kanagaraj added.

For three days, lawyers clashed with policemen all over Tamil Nadu to protest the central and state government’s alleged inaction in the Sri Lankan Tamils’ tangle.

While over 200 lawyers were arrested, cases have been registered against 300 people.

A probe by the Central Bureau of Investigation is underway.

Several opposition political parties have expressed solidarity with the lawyers since Friday.
