Chennai fire claims two young lives

Chennai, Sep 2 (IANS) Bodies of two young employees of Saravana Stores were recovered Tuesday, a day after a major fire engulfed the multi-storey building housing the shop here.S. Ramajayam Nadar, 24, and V. Kottaisamy, 27, were working inside the building and sweeping the floor when the fire broke out and caught them. They could not escape, the police said.

The building on the Ranganathan Street was constructed in violation of the norms of the Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority (CMDA).

In a statement Monday, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi said the fire could have been avoided had the building been constructed in accordance with the CMDA regulations.

Other traders on the Ranganathan Street held a protest as they were not allowed to do business by the police.

As a safety precaution, the police closed traffic on the street as the building was deemed unsafe.
