Chen Long, Wang Shixian capture crowns at China Masters

Changzhou (China), Sep 18 (IANS) Local players Chen Long and world No. 2 Wang Shixian claimed the men’s and women’s singles titles at the China Badminton Masters here Sunday.

Chen Long, ranked world No.4, defeated Chen Jin 21-16, 22-20 in the men’s final while second seed Wang Shixian was leading 21-16, 8-5 when her opponent and fellow player Jiang Yanjiao retired due to a knee injury, Xinhua reported. The agency earlier reported that Wang Shixian retired hurt and Jiang Yanjiao won the title.

After taking the first set quite easily, third-seeded Chen Long found himself in a tight corner as Chen Jin led for most of time in the second. But Chen Long finally came from behind to secure the set and the title.

Chen Long and Chen Jin knocked out Denmark’s Peter Hoeg Gade and teammate Lin Dan respectively in the semifinals Saturday.

Chen Long suffered an unexpected defeat in the first round at the World Championships last month as he lost to Kevin Cordon of Guatemala.

“The Masters title reinforced my confidence,” Chen Long was quoted as saying by Xinhua.

“The happiest thing is that I didn’t lose to foreign players here, Gade and Lee are our major opponents,” added Chen Long.
