Caracas, Oct 21 (IANS/EFE) Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez said Thursday that the tests he underwent in recent days in Cuba detected no “malignant cells”.

Dressed in a military uniform upon his arrival from Cuba in the town of La Fria in Tachira state, which borders Colombia, Chavez said that the examination “allowed (them) to verify scientifically that there are no active malignant cells in this body”, after a cancerous tumor was removed from his pelvic area in Havana in June.

“There’s no abnormal cellular activity,” the 57-year-old president said, adding that he underwent a CAT scan and an MRI, among other examinations.

“I’m free of disease. However, every four months I will have to be monitored to verify the … good evolution of what was a disease and what we’re continuing to treat,” Chavez said.

The Venezuelan leader said that “a vital phase in the treatment of the disease” had concluded “successfully”, after a combined strategy of surgery and chemotherapy.
