Chandni Chowk blaze claims one life
November 30th, 2010 - 8:20 pm ICT by IANSNew Delhi, Nov 30 (IANS) A 45-year-old firefighter died Tuesday, a day after he was injured in the blaze that broke out at an illegally run warehouse in Delhi’s Chandni Chowk market.
“Charanjeet Singh was posted at Rani Jhansi Road fire station. He rushed to Chandni Chowk with 30 other firefighters around 5 p.m. on Sunday,” a fire official said.
The congested lanes in Chandni Chowk was a major hindrance and three firefighters and a policeman sustained severe burn injuries, he added.
Another firefighter, Mahavir Singh, 45, is still undergoing treatment in a hospital.
The warehouse for plastic bags, located at the ground level of a four-storey residential building, caught fire Sunday evening. The blaze was brought under control Monday, after which the building was razed.
No resident was injured and the owner is on the run, the official added.
