Chandigarh to have high security number plates
July 12th, 2011 - 12:34 pm ICT by IANSChandigarh, July 12 (IANS) Motor vehicle owners in the union territory (UT) of Chandigarh will have to shift to new high security registration number plates for their vehicles from August 1, an official said here Tuesday.
The UT’s home department Monday notified the implementation of the ‘High Security Registration Plates in the Union Territory of Chandigarh Scheme, 2011′.
“The scheme will come into force in UT Chandigarh from 1st August, 2011, in case of new vehicles,” said a spokesman of home secretary Ram Niwas.
“As far as already registered old vehicles are concerned, the implementation of the scheme will be completed by the vehicle owners within two years from 1st August, 2011,” he said.
Those who are already registered can get the new plates till Aug 1, 2013.
“The high security registration plate will be fastened on the front and rear of the vehicle,” the spokesman said.
“It is the responsibility of the vehicle owners to procure the high security registration plates from any of the eligible vendors,” he said.
Non-compliance of the order will lead to action against vehicle owners under the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, he added.
Chandigarh has nearly 800,000 registered vehicles with one of the highest density of motor vehicles in India.
