Chandigarh school dismisses teacher for slapping Class 3 boy
July 31st, 2009 - 8:31 pm ICT by IANSChandigarh, July 31 (IANS) The authorities of a private school in Chandigarh Friday sacked a teacher who was found guilty of slapping a Class 3 boy.
Kavita Das, principal of St John’s High School, said here Friday: “As a responsible institution, we are absolutely clear that no one is above the law. We received the inquiry report Wednesday, following which an emergency meeting of the managing committee was called Thursday to deliberate on the issue.”
“We firmly believe in the dignity of each child and corporal punishment can naturally find no place in such an environment,” she added.
The guilty teacher was earlier sent on indefinite leave, but in the wake of mounting pressure from all sides, the school put her under suspension Tuesday.
Punita Singh, mother of a Class 3 student, had filed a complaint with the administration July 22 that the teacher had slapped her son several times and pulled his hair as he could not recite the mathematical table.
The incident took place July 18. However, the parents came to know about it July 20 when the boy suddenly broke down while studying at home.
Following the complaint from the child’s parents, an enquiry was ordered by the Chandigarh administration July 23. Sub Divisional Magistrate Niharika Rai submitted her report Monday to the education secretary.
The report was also sent to the government’s standing counsel for legal opinion. The counsel submitted his report Tuesday in which he said that either the school should take appropriate action against the accused teacher or the administration would move court.
However, the teacher Reema Talwar denied all the allegations and said that she was being falsely implicated. She said she had no personal grudge with the boy and she did not slap him.
